Brittney Griner transferred to Russian penal colony after appeal denied

American basketball star Brittney Griner has been being transferred to an undisclosed prison in Russia.

She has been detained for more than eight months.

The United States has denounced the move.

Griner’s legal team said her intended destination was unknown and will be officially provided once she had arrived.

She was taken into custody after she flew into an airport near Moscow with a small amount of hash oil in her luggage.

After apologizing repeatedly for what she says was an unintentional act, she pleaded guilty to the charges.

In October, a Russian court upheld the 9-year prison sentence imposed on Griner.

It furthered the stage for her transfer to a penal colony.

The basketball star's estimated value is more than $5 million after being sentenced to prison.
