What is Spirit Day? Why millions of people wear purple on October 20

October 20 marks Spirit Day to celebrate LGBT youth.

On this occasion, people wear the color purple to raise awareness about the impact of bullying on LGBT youth.

Bullying puts all youth at increased risk of depression and suicide. However, it is higher for LGBT youth.

According to CDC data, 43% of transgender youth have been bullied on school property.

At the same time, 29% of transgender youth, 21% of gay and lesbian youth and 22% of bisexual youth have attempted suicide.

Teens who identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual are reportedly more likely to experience violence than their heterosexual peers.

On this occasion, people raise awareness about enhancing support to the health and wellness of the LGBTQ+ community.

A 2021 report showed a majority of LGBTQ school-goers were bullied either in person or online.

The same report stated that only 1 in 3 found their home to be LGBT-affirming.
