Virginia students stage walkout over new anti-trans school policies

Students at almost 100 schools in Virginia participated in walkouts to protest.

They protested against a proposed policy put forward by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin restricting the rights of transgenders in public schools.

Under the new policy, parents have decision-making power about what pronouns their child use at school.

The proposal states that a student’s legal name and sex cannot be changed without a legal document or court order.

School officials should refer to each student using the pronouns appropriate to the sex appearing in their official records.

Trans students would also be forced to use school facilities that match the sex assigned to them at birth.

Students are demanding the state Department of Education revoke the guidelines.

The new guidelines will take effect in Virginia after a 30-day public comment period that began on September 26 and ends on October 26.
