Polio threat looms over America: Is the virus rebounding?

On July 21, New York State Department of Health and Rockland County Department of Health alerted the public about a polio outbreak.

This is the first case in the US since 2013.

Evidence suggests a Rockland County resident contracted polio from someone who received an oral polio vaccine.

The CDC has confirmed the presence of poliovirus on 11 wastewater samples.

There are now polio outbreaks in specific communities and certain individuals are not vaccinated against it.

Two doses of IPV (polio vaccine) offer 90% immunity to all three types of poliovirus, the CDC suggests.

Symptomatic treatments include using heat to ease muscle spasms, range of motion exercises and rehabilitation techniques.

The best way to prevent polio is to get vaccinated. Be watchful when traveling and avoid diarrheal diseases.
