Montana blocks transgender people from changing birth certificates

Montana has issued a permanent rule to block transgender people from changing their birth certificates.

Transgender people will not be able to change their birth certificates even after they undergo gender-confirmation surgery.

The move has come from Republican Governor Greg Gianforte's administration.

The development comes days before a court will hear arguments on the legality of a similar rule in effect on emergency basis since May.

The ACLU of Montana has called on state Judge Michael Moses to ban the emergency rule.

For many years, conservative legislators have been taking measures to limit the rights of transgender people.

About 1.6 million people aged 13 and above identify themselves as transgender in the US.

Nearly one in five people who identify as transgender are between ages 13 and 17.
