Mexican Independence Day: What it signifies and how to celebrate it

Mexican Independence Day is here.

In 1810, just before dawn on September 16, a priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rallied Mexicans.

He called for a revolution, delivering the “Grito de Dolores” battle cry.

This was the start of the 11-year Mexican War of Independence from Spain after being under colonial rule for over 300 years.

The “Grito de Dolores” was such an iconic moment it gave people hope that they would be free.

To wish people a "Happy Mexican Independence Day," simply repeat his words: "Viva Mexico!" and "Viva la independencia!".

One of the best ways to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day is to try local Mexican food known for its aroma, flavor.
