The cost of mental health in America

Millions of Americans suffer from mental health issues.

That annual cost for a patient's treatment can be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Traditional cost sharing arrangements such as health insurance, aren't always up to snuff.

In 2021, the average cost per therapy session was around $150.

If a patient is  referred to a psychiatrist they’ll have to pay over $250 for a one-hour session.

An average patient with depression spends nearly $11,000 on health costs annually.

Since the 1996 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, insurers cannot treat mental health benefits differently from physical health benefits.

On the contrary, only 55% of psychiatrists accept insurance in comparison to 89% of other healthcare professionals.
