Mary Peltola beats Sarah Palin to win house special election in Alaska

Democrat Mary Peltola won the special election on August 31. 

She beat former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin,  by 3% points. 

Earlier, Peltola and Palin had served together as state legislators.

Peltola will become the first Alaska Native in Congress and has a net worth of $1.5 million in 2022. 

The election took place in mail-in votes and was calculated using the  state's new ranked-choice voting system. 

Peltola was earlier elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1998. 

In the House, she served  on various standing committees, including France, Resources  and Health and  Social Services. 

She has 4 kids (with her former 2 husbands) and is married to director of Alaska Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Gene Peltola.
