Liz Truss becomes UK's new Prime Minister after meeting Queen

Liz Truss was appointed Britain’s Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth II at the Balmoral estate in Scotland

The British monarch met Truss shortly after Boris Johnson formally offered his resignation as the UK PM.

The 47-year-old leader is the third female Prime Minister in Britain, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.

Liz Truss takes the Downing Street office a day after Britain's conservative party elected her as the leader with 81,326 votes.

She defeated Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, former UK finance minister, who received 60,399 votes.

The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has a net worth of $9.6 million.

His opposing candidate, Rishi Sunak, has a net worth of abou$230 million.

In her victory speech, Truss promised to resolve recession, energy crisis and an exhausted healthcare system among other challenges.
