Who are Just Stop Oil, the group that threw soup at Van Gogh's painting?

Activists from Just Stop Oil slashed tomato soup over Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting at the National Gallery in London on October 16, 2022.

The image by the Dutch artist’s work was one of the series and was sold for $39 million  in 1987.

Just Stop Oil is a climate protest group that threw the liquid over the painting.

The two youngsters then removed their jackets to reveal ‘Just Stop Oil’ T-shirts before gluing themselves to the wall beneath the artwork.

One of the activists, Phoebe Plummer, said, “What is worth more, art or life?”

Anna Holland followed by saying, “Are you more concerned about the protection of a painting or the protection of our planet and people?”

The group has been staging sit-down protests on roads around central London for two weeks.

However, Friday’s action appeared to be an escalation of its tactics.

The activists were subsequently arrested by Met police officers for criminal damage and taken into custody at a central London police station.
