Apple’s CODA makes history at Oscars 2022

The film is the first with a predominantly deaf cast to win the coveted award.

The movie’s star Troy Kotsur is the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar. He won Best Supporting Actor.

Apple TV+ became the first streaming service to win the honor of Best Picture at the Oscars.

CODA, short for Child of Deaf Adults, revolves around the only hearing person in her deaf family, Ruby, who wants to study music.

The coming-of-age family drama was an unlikely winner. Until a few weeks back, not many had even heard of it.

Made with a modest $10,000 budget, it premiered at a virtual Sundance Film Festival in 2021.

Apple bought worldwide rights to the film for $25 million, a record in Sundance history.

Writer-director Siân Heder won Best Adapted Screenplay. The movie also honors sign language.
